MUSICHELPS GRANTS RECEIPIENTS SEPTEMBER 2023

MusicHelps has just completed our most recent Grants round and we are pleased to announce funding for 16 music projects.

These grants will go to a wide variety of music therapy programs, helping disadvantaged communities, those with disabilities, people with mental wellbeing issues, or providing support to end of life care, and these grant recipients are right the way throughout the country.

VIRTUOSO STRINGS CHARITABLE TRUST

Based in Porirua, Virtuoso provides free music tuition, instruments and orchestral experiences for youth from disadvantaged backgrounds.

MusicHelps was able to support the purchase of new stringed instruments for their programmes supporting refugees, those with disabilities and those from challenged socio-economic backgrounds.

 

NELSON CENTRE OF MUSICAL ARTS

NCMA is a community music centre offering programmes for 700 students ranging from 6 to96 years old in the Nelson region.

MusicHelps was able to support their Music Therapy Pathways programme and their NelSONGNeurological Choir that uses music to assist with the healing and personalgrowth of people. Participants include people with Parkinson’s, stroke, aphasia, stress, anxiety, brain trauma and other health conditions.

 

CHRISTCHURCH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra run and acclaimed multi-week programme Flourish for people living with the early stages of dementia who engage in a range of musical activities with a focus on interaction and brain stimulation and health through music.

MusicHelps was able to directly support this programme and those musicians involved in its delivery.

 

BE FREE PLAY MUSIC

Be Free Play Music in KeriKeri offer a free Mentoring through Music programme that helps youth (12-17 year olds) gain self-esteem, confidence and resilience skills.

MusicHelps was able to support the development of the programme facilitation guide and training the mentors.

 

THE CHAMPION CENTRE

The Champion Centre in Christchurch provides free, high quality, multi- disciplinary early intervention programmes for Canterbury infants and young children with disabilities and developmental delays from birth to 6 years of age.

MusicHelps was able to support their Musical Play Therapy Programme

CRESCENDO

Crescendo in Auckland offers music mentoring and wellbeing programmes for young people aged15-24 who may not fit into mainstream education settings or may have been referred by other services.  Crescendo’s programmes help young people to positively express themselves and nurture creativity through skills development in songwriting, audio engineering, music production and recording.

MusicHelps was able to directly support their Music mentoring and Wellbeing programme.

 

NELSON ASTHMA SOCIETY

Nelson Asthma Society provide support services to those suffering from asthma and related respiratory conditions in the Nelson region.

MusicHelps was able to support their ‘Sing your lungs out’ programme bringing people together with a choir to sing once a week, which studies have shown vastly improves lung capacity and diaphragmatic strength and breathing.

 

MAPURA STUDIOS 

Mapura Studios is a creative space in Auckland working with around 400 people with disability and diversity each week.

MusicHelps was able to support their music therapy programme impacting the lives of hundreds in their communities who live with neurological conditions and the onset of dementia.

MUSIC THERAPY NEW ZEALAND

MTNZis a membership organsation that advocates the employment of NZ registered Music Therapists and governs standards of practice.

MusicHelps was able to support their series of workshops “Music for Self- Care: Enhancing and supporting our own Waiora and Hauora (health & well-being) as professionals”.

 

DANCE THERAPY NEW ZEALAND

DTNZ provides support to people of all ages living with disabilities, menta lillness, tamariki from low-income neighbourhoods and survivors of sexual abuse.

MusicHelps was able to support their STARS programme catering to young people 15+ with intellectual and/or physical disabilities including rangatahi on the autism spectrum and with cerebral palsy.

EVARO

Evaro in Wellington provides services for adults with intellectual disabilities, focusing on life-skills, gaining employment and participation in their communities.

MusicHelps supports their music therapy programme supporting those affected by challenging socio- economic conditions, mental health impairment or other medical conditions.

NEWTOWN SCHOOL

Newtown School in central Wellington provides primary school education from years 1-6.

MusicHelps was able to support their music therapy programme directly impacting the lives of non-verbal students with autism spectrum disorder and at risk students who have experienced family trauma.

 

UPPER HUTT COLLEGE

MusicHelps was able to support Upper Hutt College in the Hutt Valley with their music therapy programme supporting a musically talented young man with an intellectual disability who would not have access to this support otherwise.

MIX CONNECTING, CREATING, LIVING

Mix supports those living with the experience of mental illness, through a variety of creative and skills programmes in Petone, Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt.

MusicHelps supports their music therapy programme working with people 18+ who come from backgrounds facing economic hardship, stigma and discrimination.

PRESBYTERIAN SUPPORT UPPER SOUTH ISLAND

Presbyterian Support Is a community-based organization in the upper South Island offering a range of social services for over 4,000 people.

MusicHelps was able to support their Music therapy programmes servicing frail and/or isolated older people living with memory loss relating to Alzheimer’s or dementia.

 

WHAKAARO TAHI COMMUNITY TRUST

Based in Kaitaia they provide mobile music tuition to the far north community, specifically at-risk, disadvantaged and disengaged youth and people with disabilities.

MusicHelps was able to support their music performance programme to better engage and participate with disaffected.
